Architect. Born in India and educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh and London and Edinburgh Schools of Architecture. Assisted Sir Edwin Lutyens with the drawings of the Viceregal Buildings in Delhi. Emerged as the leading British architect after the Second World War with his fresh approach to university buildings including Queen's College, Cambridge and Sussex. Noted for his pavilions for the Festival of Britain (1951) and his bold design for Coventry Cathedral (1951). Professor of Architecture Leeds (1955-6) and at the Royal Academy from 1961.
