Born in New Zealand, McIndoe came to London and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1932. As consultant to the RAF, in 1939 he organised the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, to become a rehabilitation centre for injured airmen and air-raid casualties. His skill in remodelling burnt faces and limbs was renowned. McIndoe was Vice-President of the Royal College of Surgeons (1948-60), and a founder of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons.
