London-born Anthony Hope trained as a lawyer and barrister, was called to the Bar in 1887 and practised law until 1894. His first novel was A Man of Mark (1890), but it was his second work, The Prisoner of Zenda, which brought him to prominence. It was published in 1894 and was an immediate success, enabling Hope to give up law and concentrate solely on writing.
