by William Salter

Entering the army in 1794, Barnard rose quickly through the ranks. He fought in the 1812-14 Peninsular War in Spain, and in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo. Wellington had so high an opinion of his services that he appointed him Commander of the British division occupying Paris. On the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars, Barnard occupied various positions in the Royal Household. In 1849 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.
