Suffering from rheumatic fever and often confined to bed as a child, Marshall's father encouraged her to read books on zoology and geology. After graduating in botany and zoology, she remained at Glasgow University on the Carnegie fellowship. Encouraged by John Kerr to join the marine station on the Isle of Cumbrae, Marshall joined the laboratory in 1922 and remained there till retirement.
