by John Linnell

In 1820, Sarah Taylor married philosopher and jurist John Austin. Unlike her husband, she was extremely gregarious and drew around her a circle of prominent radical intellectuals at their Westminster home. She was a gifted translator and used this talent to supplement the family income, popularising much German literature in the process. After her husband's death in 1859, she edited his Lectures on Jurisprudence. She also edited the Memoirs of Sydney Smith (1855) and Lady Duff-Gordon's Letters from Egypt (1865).

Card size: 125mm x 175mm
