Recognised as a pioneer in the advancements of colour photography in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Acland was introduced to photography at an early age when she was photographed with her friend Ina Liddell by Lewis Carroll. At 19, Acland met the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron and began to take up portrait photography herself, with eminent subjects including John Ruskin and William Gladstone.
