Lawrence first exhibited his work in London at the Society of British Artists, based on Suffolk Street, in 1834, and in 1836 he sent three portraits to the Royal Academy. Early in life he became closely associated with the Victorian literati, and he was to draw and paint most of the writers and thinkers of his day many times.
