This medal was struck to mark the opening of the Unitarian Church of the Messiah in Birmingham in 1862. It served as 'an expression of respect' to the church's minister, Samuel Bache, as reported in the Birmingham Daily Post at the time. The portrait head was described as an excellent likeness. On the reverse is a perspective view of the church, which was built to the design of J.J. Bateman, with an inscription in gothic lettering, which was thought appropriate to the church's design.
