Sent to Italy in 1820 by his father, also a sculptor, Sir Richard Westmacott, he undertook a thorough study of the country's ancient sculpture, whilst also playing a central role in establishing the British academy in Rome. After six years Westmacott returned to London to join his father's busy studio. He was elected an Associate Royal Academician in 1838, and a full member in 1849. His diploma work, Jupiter and Ganymede, can still be seen at the Royal Academy.
