Richard Lumley rose to high office in both Parliament and the military. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1724 and a Privy Councillor in 1727, and in 1739 reached the rank of Lieutenant-General in the army. Noted for his gallantry, politeness and skill as an orator, Lumley inexplicably shot himself in 1740 while preparations were being made for his marriage.
