A naval officer, best known for his exploration of the Pacific coast along the modern day Canadian province of British Columbia and the American states of Alaska, Washington and Oregon. He entered the navy at thirteen and from 1772-80 he accompanied James Cook on his voyages. In 1791 Vancouver took command of the expedition to the northwest coast of North America for which he is noted.
