A sign of the simplicity they preferred, Princess Charlotte originally commissioned this subtle portrait as a birthday present for Prince Leopold. It gained terrible poignancy after her death. The portrait sittings began at Claremont when she was heavily pregnant, and it was completed posthumously. Sir Thomas Lawrence wrote an emotional account of the time he spent with the happy couple in the days before her death.
