by Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg

Painter; born in Strasbourg, he trained in Paris before coming to England in 1771. He became principal designer at Drury Lane under his friend Garrick and his work for the theatre revolutionised British stage design. In 1782, he won popular acclaim with the Eidophusikon, a spectacle made up of moving pictures, coloured lights and music. His academic landscapes and marine paintings show a similar preoccupation with romantic lighting and dramatic effects.
