London-born actor, playwright and film director. First appeared on the stage in 1938 and was established by the time of the Second World War when he served for four years in the army. Known for roles in films such as Spartacus (1960) and Death on the Nile (1970), as well as work as a playwright. His plays include The Love of Four Colonels (1951) and Romanoff and Juliet (1956).
