Andrew Tift has exhibited many times in the BP Portrait Award, winning the BP Travel Award in1994 and third prize in 1999. This double portrait, intended to show the private rather than the public Kinnocks was the result of six sittings; one in Brussels and five at their home near Cardiff. Tift has recorded numeous objects in meticulous detail, many of which were selected by the Kinnocks for their symbolic relevance including family photographs and busts of their heroes, Nelson Mandela and Aneurin Bevan.
