The photographer George Washington Wilson excelled at producing highly-detailed pictures such as this. He was invited by Queen Victoria to photograph the royal estate at Balmoral, where he produced portraits of the royal family and household. He photographed the families of foresters and ghillies that worked on the estate, sitters who would not have been deemed worthy of painted portraits, but could now be immortalised through photography.
