The portrait shows Mary in her famous 'Peacock Dress' made by the House of Worth, from Indian 'cloth of gold' fabric trimmed with fresh white roses. The 'eyes' of the embroidered peacock feathers were decorated with iridescent beetle wings, which eager onlookers mistook for emeralds.
