Born Marion Sapherson in Middlesbrough, Ryan entered the world of show business aged twenty-one, performing at the Locarno in Leeds. Spotted by Ray Ellington, she was signed up to sing with his group and made her debut with Ellington in Glasgow in 1953. She left the group to pursue a solo career and had her first entry in the Top Twenty with 'Hot Diggity' in 1956.
