Granville Barker first produced John Masefield's most successful play with McCarthy as Nan for The Pioneer Players at the Royalty Theatre in 1908. McCarthy's rural upbringing and her experience of melodrama helped her believe she was 'the living Nan'. The Tragedy of Nan was staged again with Lillah McCarthy as the lead role at the Court Theatre in 1911.
