In 1911, after the failure of a number projects to create an arts theatre in London, Granville-Barker became depressed and considered moving to Germany. In response McCarthy leased the Little Theatre and offered her husband the opportunity to direct again. Here she played Hilda in Ibsen's The Master Builder. McCarthy's management transferred to the Kingsway Theatre in 1912 where she took another lead in Euripedes' s Iphigenia in Tauris, a translation by Gilbert Murray.
