Waller first appeared as D'Artagnan in Henry Hamilton's adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's romantic drama Les Trois Mousquetaires at the Metropole Theatre in Camberwell, London in September 1898. The Times described the character as 'admirably adapted to his robust and romantic method' and the production was received 'with shouts of approval' (13 September 1898). It transferred to the Globe Theatre in the month after, followed by Her Majesty's Theatre (both in London) in January 1899. His performance as D'Artagnan made him a stage idol.
