Born in Glasgow, McComb studied at the Regional College of Art, Manchester and at the Slade (1956-60). He has taught widely in provincial art schools and at the Slade, Goldsmiths College and the Royal Academy Schools. His work was included in Kitaj's The Human Clay at the Hayward, 1976 and the following year had his first solo exhibition at the Coracle Press.
