Born Prince Ferdinand Victor Albert Mainrad of Hohenzollern, the retiring, botanist prince was chosen to succeed his childless uncle, Charles as King of Roumania in October 1914. He married Princess Marie, the daughter of Queen Victoria's 2nd son in 1893. Ferdinand became known as 'the Integrator' as a result of gaining territory at the Paris Peace Conferences in 1919, doubling Romania's size.
