Chief of Bechuanaland who allied himself with British colonisers in the area. Khama was converted to Christianity in 1860. He succeeded to the cheiftanship of the Ngwato (Manwato or Bamangwato) people I 1875. In 1885 Khama III acquiesced happily when Bechuanaland was declared a protectorate of Great Britain.
