After qualifying as a doctor in 1911, Fairfield worked in London and was appointed as the first female senior medical officer at the London Country Council. She was also active in the fight for women to gain the vote. On the outbreak of war, she was turned away by the War Office but by 1917 the government's attitude had changed and Fairfield joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps as a medical officer.
