John Wilson is best known as Christopher North, one of the key figures behind the early success and reputation of Blackwood's Magazine. After graduating in 1807, he purchased a house in the Lake District and retired there to pursue the life of a gentleman of leisure, dedicating himself to outdoor pursuits and writing poetry. His first volume, The Isle of Palms and other Poems, was published in 1812. He lost much of his inheritance in 1815 and, needing to earn his living, turned to writing.... more
