John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute, was the son of the 3rd Earl of Bute. As his father's heir he was styled Lord Mountstuart from birth. Mountstuart was elected to Parliament as a Tory MP in 1766, the year that also saw his marriage to Charlotte Hickman-Windsor (daughter of the 2nd Viscount Windsor). Following the deaths of his wife's parents the Windsor estates in south Wales passed to Mountstuart, who restored Cardiff Castle. He was created Baron Cardiff in 1776.
