John Laviers Wheatley was born at Avergavenny and studied art under Stanhope Forbes and Walter Sickert, as well as at the Slade School of Art. He joined the New English Art Club in 1917, and was an official war artist from 1918 to 1920. After the war he moved to South Africa, where he was Director of the National Gallery and a Professor at the University of Cape Town.
