by Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt
John Dormer was a country gentleman. Although he never entered parliament, his support for the Whig party, who upheld 'liberal' principals and opposed absolutist monarchy, led him to join the Kit-Cat Club. The members of the Kit-Cat Club were united by their political sympathies rather than their social status. This meant that men like Dormer, without title or high office, could mix with prominent aristocrats and politicians.
