Doran worked as a tutor to George Murray, later the Duke of Atholl, and subsequently as a tutor in a number of other households. He began writing for the London Literary Chronicle and The Athenaeum. Doran turned to writing full time in the 1830s and in 1841 he became literary editor of the Church and State Gazette. He was for a short time editor of The Athenaeum.
