Daphne Todd trained at the Slade and was President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (1994-2000). In 1983 she received second prize in the John Player Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery. The sittings for this portrait partly took place at the National Gallery with the Sainsbury Wing as a backdrop. Her portraits of Dame Janet Baker, Spike Milligan and Christopher Ondaatje are also in the Gallery collection.
