John Campbell Gordon was the grandson of Conservative prime minister George Hamilton-Gordon. Having succeeded to the earldom on his eldest brother's death in 1870, he took up his seat in the House of Lords, where he was a close friend and supporter of the Whig prime minister, William Gladstone. Aberdeen served twice as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, in 1886 and from 1905 to 1915. In 1893, he was appointed for five years as Governor General of Canada.
