This caricature was published to mark the amalgamation of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway to form the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR). James Staats Forbes had been Chairman and General Manager of the LC&DR since 1873. He declined the chairmanship of the new joint board, but acted as its adviser.
