Trained in the law, James Wilde was called to the Bar as a barrister in 1839 and was elected as a bencher at the Inner Temple in 1856. He rapidly built a successful legal practice on the northern circuit and at Westminster and was made a Queen's Counsel in 1855. In 1860, he was appointed Baron of the Exchequer and was knighted. Three years later, he was promoted to the Court of Probate and Divorce, one of the most important judgeships in the country.... more
