James Hodgson became Flamsteed's assistant at the Royal Observatory in 1696 and in 1709 was appointed to run the Royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital. He wrote several books on navigation and held seminars in astronomy and philosophy. He was influential in communicating astronomical ideas and discoveries, showing the importance of astronomy to navigation.
