by Simon de Passe

A wealthy courtier and favourite of both James I and Charles I, Hay undertook various diplomatic missions for both kings. He appears to have followed his family motto, 'Spare naught', and was famous for his good nature, extravagance, and splendid hospitality. Elizabeth of Bohemia, the daughter of James I, referred to him affectionately in her letters as 'camel-face'.
