Jewellery designer for Cartier (1924-31) and Chief Deception Officer, Army Camouflage (1941-6), Gardner had designed the Britain Can I Make It exhibition in 1946 before joining the Festival Office's Exhibition Presentation Panel. He worked with Hugh Casson on 'The People', the 1851 Centenary pavilion and the Shot Tower and designed the Festival Gardens at Battersea.
