by Otto Theodor Leyde, after Sir John Everett Millais, 1st Bt

Although he began his career by painting historical and literary subjects, Hook made his name with briskly worked seascapes and coastal scenes. In the 1850s, he left his London studio for Surrey, eventually building a house at Churt, near Farnham, which he christened 'Silverbeck' and which was his home from 1866 until his death. Hook and his family made themselves self-sufficient at Silverbeck, growing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and harvesting corn which they ground in a small private watermill.

Card size: 125mm x 175mm

Images are printed in their original proportions, within a white border.
