From 1913 he worked in London in a music publisher's office. He made his London début in the same year when he was engaged as cinema organist at the Alexandra, Stoke Newington. He was assistant pianist in cabaret at Queen's Hall Roof, joined the resident band, and became its leader. In 1921 he made his first records with the Queen's Dance Orchestra for His Master's Voice and, as Jack Hylton's Jazz Band, for Zonophone.
