Born in West Bengal, India, Suhrawardy studied at Oxford University after completing his master's degree in Calcutta. Called to the bar from Gray's Inn in 1918, he returned to India, practising as a barrister at Calcutta High Court. He joined Bengal's nationalist politics, establishing the first Independent Muslim Party. In a strategic move, he later merged his party with Jinnah's Muslim League Party which was gaining popularity.
