One of the greatest newspaper editors of the modern era. At fifteen he worked briefly on a local Cardiff paper, the Penarth News, before moving to the Evening Chronicle in Manchester. He was recruited in 1932 to the Fleet Street-based Sunday Chronicle as features editor at the extremely young age of nineteen.
