Butler was appointed headmaster of Harrow in 1859, at the age of just twenty-six; he remained in this post until 1885. He did much to modernise the school and established good relationships with both boys and staff, taking a personal interest in their welfare. The demands of school management led to a serious illness in 1881, and in 1885 he accepted the position of dean of Gloucester Cathedral.
