At eighteen Jones moved to London, and was employed by a draper in the City. During this period he was an ardent theatregoer and vowed to become a dramatist himself. He was twenty-seven before his first piece, Only Round the Corner, was produced. Within a few years his plays The Middleman (1889), and Judah (1890) established his reputation as a serious playwright.
