Stanley's family moved from Nova Scotia to Florence in 1814 and her grandson Betrand Russell viewed this upbringing as fundamental to her progressive outlook, 'She was downright, free from prudery, and eighteenth-century rather than Victorian in her conversation'. A member of the National Union for the Improvement of Women's Education, her efforts focused on campaigns for women's education.
