Grammy-award winner who popularised Caribbean Calypso music which introduced Jamaican folk music to the United States. Belafont's album 'Calypso' (1956) was the first LP by a solo artist to sell millions of copies. Besides Calypso, Belafonte is well known for other musical genres including blues, folk and gospel, and has released thirty studio albums and eight live albums, making him one of the most successful African-American singers in history.
