Leveson-Gower entered Parliament as a Whig MP in 1837. He transferred to the House of Lords on his father's death in 1846, where his first speech was in favour of the repeal of the Corn Laws. He entered the cabinet, as Paymaster-General, in 1851 and his main work during this period was to assist Prince Albert in the organisation of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Granville's name is mainly associated with his two tenures as Foreign Secretary (1870-4 and 1880-5).
