Fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek and Hebrew, respected as a cleric, preacher, and academic, as well as a writer and historian. Burnet became Professor of Divinity at Glasgow University in 1669, but resigned in 1674 and moved to London after a disagreement with his patron, the Duke of Lauderdale.
