A Flemish artist, engraver and cartographer. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped establish Amsterdam as the centre of cartography in Europe in the seventeenth century. Hondius moved to London in 1583 where he worked engraving maps and charts with information brought back from mariners.
