A composer, author and artist, Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson succeeded his uncle to the title of Baron Berners in 1918. Educated at Eton, he became an honorary attaché to the embassies at Constantinople (1909-11) and Rome (1911-19). He wrote five humorous novels and two volumes of autobiography, and supplied music for ballet, including Diaghilev and three scores for the Sadler's Wells Ballet Company. His music, like his writing, is characterised by his humour and gift for pastiche. He was a painter of landscapes in particular.
